What is the "right fit"?

Finding a therapist can be so daunting whether you've participated in therapy before or are looking for the first time. You may spend hours scanning websites and attempting to figure out based off of the descriptions if that person is someone you could connect with. Therapy is all about the relationship between you and your therapist, so it's super important!

Here are some things to think through when deciding:

  • What are my goals? Maybe you would like to work on processing previous traumatic events, self esteem, navigating your relationships, or so on. Maybe you're not sure what your goals are but just know that the time with a therapist for you to be able to get support would be beneficial, that's great too!

  • What do I value in a therapist? Ever find that when you're building friendships you seem to connect best with those who have similar ideas and belief systems? Finding a therapist isn't that different. If it's important to you that a therapist be allied and knowledgeable with your community, values, and identities; ask them about it!

  • What do all these treatment modalities mean? You will see different trainings, certificates, and therapeutic interventions utilized by the therapist listed with their bio. You can do your research into what these different styles and approaches mean through internet searches and also utilizing a consultation call to ask them more.

  • Do a vibe check! Reach out to several therapists and schedule consultation calls. Many therapists will offer these at no cost. Pay attention to your gut and what do you feel. How does their voice sound to you? What about the way they use their words? Are you noticing any discomfort? Go with that.

  • Administrative necessities: Do you need to use insurance or are you paying out of pocket? Would you like virtual sessions, in person, or a mix of both? Do their schedules align with your scheduling needs?

And most importantly, know that when making your decision there should be no pressure or worry of hurting someone's feelings. I want you to do what is best for YOU!
